7 Reading & Writing Activities for Halloween!

October 3, 2022

Whew, you’ve made it through September and it’s officially October! This was always such an accomplishment for me because the kids finally had a good idea of our daily routine and I was settled in to our curriculum and schedule for the year. Now that you finally have a grip on your class this year I’ve got Halloween reading and writing activities for you. I’ve made your planning this month easy with seven fun and engaging Halloween resources that you will absolutely want to use in your classroom this month!

#1 The Good, The Bad, and the Spooky

If you’ve read other books in this collection, you know that this will be a winner! I love using this book for teaching social emotional skills, as well as for reading comprehension.

This activity is really fun. There is a seed flip-up writing craft where you can pick and choose different sheets for the middle. Then, it also has multiple comprehension sheets that you can use in addition to just the activity. It’s a great way to extend the story and creates an awesome discussion with your class.

#2 Creepy Crayon!

Creepy Crayon! is the latest from Aaron Reynolds in his Creepy book collection (you know Creepy Carrots! and Creepy Pair of Underwear!). This newest book does not disappoint!

This adorable craft incorporates many reading comprehension strategies, plus it has a text-to-self writing connection and an order of events activity. There are numerous graphic organizers for you to choose from, depending on where your students are at this year.

#3 The Hallo-wiener

This is hands down one of my favorite books of all time – not just for Halloween! I grew up with wiener dogs and so I have a soft spot for Oscar :-). Not only is this book wildly entertaining for your students, it has a great message about inclusion and will lead a great class discussion.

This will make the cutest display for your class and has multiple graphic organizers for you to pick from.

#4 Halloween Flip Book

This Halloween flipbook is perfect for a quick writing activity. There is NO CUTTING, all you have to do is print back to back, line them up and fold! Easy peasy (lemony squeezy)! I promise this will turn out really cute and give the students a chance to write all about their Halloween plans!

#5 Scaredy Cat, Splat!

Splat has always been one of my favorite characters. The books are great and always leave us with a good message and a good feeling. Scaredy-Cat, Splat! is a classic Halloween story for your class.

This is another cute activity that gives your students great story retell practice. After they complete the activities inside, they get to design their own jack-o-lantern face for the front of the project. These always turn out really creative!

#6 Click, Clack, BOO!

Another series that my students and I have always enjoyed is from the Click, Clack, Moo! collection. As you would guess, Click, Clack, BOO! has a Halloween theme and is adorable because all the barnyard animals dress up for the occasion!

#7 Halloween Scrambled Sentences

Last but certainly not least is a super fun and quick activity for your class. These Halloween Scrambled Sentences are a no prep activity that you can use in so many ways. I used to put them out for morning work, but they can be used for homework or even fast finishers.

I hope this gave you some great ideas for reading and writing activities for Halloween. Click below to check out all my Halloween products. Enjoy!!!
